New Book: Minor Setback or Major Disaster? The Rise and Demise of Minor Seminaries in the United States, 1958-1983
Fr. Bob Anello, MSA, a distinguished alumnus and a member of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles, has written a new book, Minor Setback or Major Disaster? The Rise and Demise of Minor Seminaries in the United States, 1958-1983. Published by En Route Books and Media, the book presents the history of minor seminaries from the concept’s inception following the sixteenth-century Council of Trent’s mandate for a new training method for the Catholic priesthood up to the present.
Fr. Steven Avella, Ph.D., observes, “This exhaustively researched book tells the fascinating story of a once-thriving system of priestly formation that had already began to fade just prior to Vatican II.” For a sense of the importance of this topic, please review the statistics from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) for seminary populations in 2017-2018.
